Dave Ellis, a freelance web designer based in Leeds, was asked to take part in the Netmag build off feature (appeared in issue 199). The brief was to mock up the homepage of a fundraising site that should make people want to donate money in a subtle but convincing manner.

I love how the design has a ‘playground’ feel – there’s lots to attract your attention and keep you interested, and yet it all works together seamlessly and doesn’t feel over crowded.

The donate call-to-action is of course the first thing you see at the top of the page with plenty of space around it. Focus is further strengthened by the use of the gorilla photograph, who’s gaze points towards the text (ref: You Look Where They Look.)

Underneath we find an interactive feature that prompts the user to discover the varying benefits of increasing sums of contribution; the slider is clever because it presents curiosity with each sideward movement. Further down are additional modules that are each beautifully designed, they have purpose in the way they’re individually displayed and, again, they make the user want to interact – important for any website.

Lastly the whole design is bought together by an earthy colour palette, and sensible font choice – stylish but sophisticated.
